“The Government’s mishandling of the COVID-19 crisis and, in particular, its failure to provide an adequate system of test, track and trace has led us to the situation we’re facing now with everyone in Nottingham being asked to stop meeting other households indoors to protect themselves and others.

From the beginning of September many Nottingham residents were unable to access tests when they needed them, then last week hundreds of positive cases were missed off the count and their close contacts were left unaware that they might be spreading the virus. By early this week, it was clear that COVID-19 cases in Nottingham were already at a worryingly high level and rising rapidly. Instead of consulting the Councils and taking clear and decisive action, Ministers continue to sit on their hands and sleepwalk us into the same devastating situation we faced earlier in the year.

The Councils are doing all they can to keep people safe, by asking both City and County residents not to meet other households indoors, but they need Government backing. This is a crucial moment if we are to gain control of this virus before the winter season. We need proper leadership and for Ministers to listen and act now.”
