Lilian Greenwood, MP for Nottingham South, has been appointed to the heart of Ed Miliband's "new generation" team, as he assembled his shadow cabinet and frontbench.
The new Labour leader asked the City MP to take on the position of Assistant Whip, giving her responsibility for organising other Labour MPs when the party votes in the House of Commons.
Labour's new team will challenge the coalition Government in Parliament debating issues such as Cameron and Clegg's plans to cut child benefit, lift the cap on tuition fees and scrap thousands of public sector jobs.
Lilian Greenwood said, "I was honoured to be asked to join Ed's new team, and I am looking forward to working with him as part of an effective and responsible opposition to the ConDem coalition. We will hold this Government to account over their programme of severe cuts and advocate fair and progressive alternatives."
Ed Miliband said, "I am particularly pleased that I could bring in a new generation of talent, while also using the experience of a broad range of Labour MPs. This is a team from all parts of the party, which will robustly hold the coalition government to account."
