Lilian met constituents concerned about the suffering of millions of Yemenis as the conflict in their country reaches the end of its fourth year, at an event in Westminster on Wednesday 20th March, and joined them in urging all warring parties end to the conflict.

The constituents are calling for continued leadership from the UK Government to help bring about an immediate nationwide ceasefire and for an end to UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which is leading a coalition of countries giving military support to the internationally recognised government.

Airstrikes and fighting are continuing across Yemen despite an agreement reached between the internationally recognised government and the Houthis late last year at talks brokered by the UN. The agreement included a ceasefire for the key port of Hudaydah, as well as a prisoner exchange and a statement of understanding over the besieged city of Taiz.

But the agreements didn’t go far enough in conveying the urgency of revitalising Yemen’s economy, removing restrictions from its air and sea ports, and bringing an end to the violence across the country. Millions of Yemenis remain on the brink of famine.

Lilian met constituents at the event “A Day for Yemen” which was organised by Oxfam and 10 other organisations as part of ten days of action to raise awareness of the situation in Yemen.
